Throughout Oceania climate change and population gains are exerting pressure on the natural resources traditionally used so that some shells, flowers and leaves are no longer available.
Oceania explores the use of the cowrie shell for the adornment of the body. This shell has been used traditionally as currency and for adornment throughout the most remote places in the world for centuries. I have used plastic off cuts, reflecting on the current causes of pollution from the plastic wastes from the foreign fishing boats and explored ways of using the waste to adorn the body.
Roland Barthes predicted that plastics would abolish the ‘heirchary of substances’! I think that the use of recycled material makes for a more sustainable future.
